Historical Context
Editorially reviewedKenmon Shokamon (c. 1467–1470) is an album of drawings; names on those drawings are later catalogue labels. Two-leaf aoi already appears there (hana-tsuki futaba-aoi; futatsu-aoi paired with Tanba Nishida). Three-leaf Tokugawa mitsuba-aoi is a later shogunal type, not this drawing class. Honda tachi-aoi is a later enclosed standing two-leaf cut. Kamo’s association with the living plant is shrine and festival use, not evidence that the two-leaf warrior kamon originated as a shrine crest.
Provenance: Kenmon Shokamon includes two-leaf aoi drawings, among them hana-tsuki futaba-aoi and futatsu-aoi for Tanba Nishida. Those house pairings are Muromachi album evidence; the type-names are later labels. Tokugawa mitsuba-aoi and Honda tachi-aoi are later named cuts, not this type. Kamo futaba-aoi remains a shrine plant/festival mark, not by itself a warrior kamon.
