Historical Context
Editorially reviewedThe Mōko Shūrai Ekotoba depicts the 1274 Mongol invasion; the surviving illustrated scroll is later thirteenth century and associates a parallel-feather banner with Kikuchi. Kenmon Shokamon (見聞諸家紋, c. 1467–1470) is a Muromachi album that already splits narabi, chigai, daki, ringed and unringed forms, and shaft counts. A ring or roundel is not the default for this type. Asano’s maru-ni-chigai-taka-no-ha is a later Edo named cut.
Provenance: Mōko Shūrai Ekotoba parallel-feather banner associated with Kikuchi (event 1274; surviving scroll later 13th c.). Kenmon Shokamon records Kikuchi narabi-taka-no-ha and already separates chigai, daki, and ringed versus unringed shaft counts.
