Historical Context
Editorially reviewedKenmon Shokamon (見聞諸家紋, c. 1467–1470) is a Muromachi album of warrior-house drawings and already distinguishes left and right mitsudomoe as buke types. The enclosed circling three-tomoe of this type is not the court kuruma-mon named in Jien’s Gukanshō (1220) for a tomoe oxcart associated with Fujiwara no Sanesue, nor is shrine or roof-tile tomoe by itself a family kamon. Left rotation is defining.
Provenance: Kenmon Shokamon buke drawings of hidari- and migi-mitsudomoe (Utsunomiya, Kobayakawa, and others). Gukanshō (1220) names a tomoe oxcart as court kuruma-mon, not this enclosed warrior type.
