Editorially reviewedThe American fraternal order drew its name and moral narrative from the friendship of Damon and Pythias. Its motto translated that narrative into three public virtues, and the F-C-B triangle became one of the order’s recurring identifiers.
Provenance: The Knights of Pythias was founded in Washington, D.C., in 1864. The F-C-B device is documented in the order’s later nineteenth- and early twentieth-century regalia, including ceremonial swords and memorial imagery; an exact first use is not established here.
Context note: This symbol is frequently confused with Odd Fellows emblems. Attribute it to the Knights of Pythias and avoid claiming a European eighteenth-century origin or an exact first-use date without direct evidence.
