Historical Context
Editorially reviewedThe emblem was given physical form in lodge equipment used for ceremony, procession, and public display. Such objects connect the order’s charitable ideals with the highly visible material culture of nineteenth-century fraternal organizations.
Provenance: Surviving American and Australian museum objects document the heart in hand in Independent Order of Odd Fellows material culture, including a United States ceremonial staff dated about 1875–1900.
Context note: The heart-in-hand motif is not exclusive to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Avoid assigning an unmarked example to the order without corroborating lodge context.
