William Holbeck WH Merchant Mark preview

Historical Context

Editorially reviewed

York’s Guildhall roof contained several shields bearing merchants’ marks. One shield combined a merchant device with the initials WH and has been tentatively linked to William Holbeck, who served as mayor of York in 1449, 1458 and later terms. The identification remains qualified in the historic record.

Provenance: Recorded among merchant-mark shields in York Guildhall; the WH device is tentatively associated with William Holbeck.
