Editorially reviewedAlexander Thurston was a Norwich grocer and mercer who became sheriff in 1587, mayor in 1600 and MP in 1601. In 1599 he remodelled his house with stone fireplaces bearing his merchant mark and the date, while the Aldrich family arms of his wife occupied a separate spandrel.
Provenance: Carved on stone fireplaces installed in Thurston’s Norwich house in 1599, paired separately with his wife’s family arms.
