Historical Context

Mjölnir is Thor's hammer in medieval Norse literary tradition, while miniature hammer pendants provide direct archaeological evidence for the emblem in Viking-age material culture. Surviving examples date especially to the ninth through eleventh centuries and were worn as pendants or amulets. Protection and blessing are plausible religious functions, but individual wearers' intentions cannot always be recovered; modern strength and identity readings build on the hammer's established association with Thor.

Provenance: Widely represented in archaeology and saga tradition as Thor's hammer and a sign of protection.
