Palm fronds carried Christian associations with martyrdom, victory, Paradise, and Jerusalem. Surviving fourteenth- and fifteenth-century lead pilgrim badges were made in palm-frond form. This artwork uses that attested object type without claiming that every palm badge identified a Holy Land palmer.
