Historical Context
Editorially reviewedThe emblem appears on badges, seals, invitations, photographs, and the society’s nineteenth-century meeting hall. Its documented collegiate-fraternal use has accumulated extensive conspiracy mythology that should be kept separate from archival evidence.
Provenance: Skull and Bones was founded at Yale in 1832. A contemporary recollection states that the skull and crossbones was first drawn on a meeting notice to attract attention; it soon supplied the society’s public nickname and was adopted above the number 322 on its badge.
Context note: The society remains private and the meaning of 322 is disputed. Avoid presenting theories about political control, occult worship, or an ancient lineage as documented fact.
