Masonic Beehive preview

Historical Context

Editorially reviewed

The beehive forms part of the wider moralising emblem tradition used by modern Freemasonry. It remains active in some ritual systems, while in others—including much English practice after the union of 1813—it became less prominent.

Provenance: Bees and hives carried moral and communal associations before Freemasonry. A Masonic association is recorded in early-eighteenth-century material, and the beehive later appeared in Master Mason lectures, charts, tracing boards, and lodge decoration in several jurisdictions.

Context note: A beehive is a widespread civic, religious, and commercial motif; its presence without supporting context does not establish Masonic affiliation.
