Editorially reviewedThe emblem reflects the Orientalist pageantry popular in late-nineteenth-century American entertainment and fraternal culture. It became an institutional badge on fezzes, jewellery, publications, and chapter material, while the fraternity later developed a major paediatric healthcare philanthropy.
Provenance: The fraternity was organised in New York in 1871–1872 as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Its founders selected an Arabian-themed style for its ritual, costumes, fez, and emblem; the organisation is now known as Shriners International.
Context note: The historical name and imagery use stereotyped Middle Eastern and North African motifs. They should be described as American Orientalist fraternal design, not as authentic Islamic or Arab symbolism.
