Historical Context
Editorially reviewedCross-shaped signs are documented on sixth- and seventh-century pottery across parts of Central and Eastern Europe, while later Kyivan Rus’ metalwork includes unmistakably Christian crosses. A Kyivan Rus’ ring made in Kyiv around 1000–1200, for example, uses repeated crosses to declare Christian faith. These contexts demonstrate why a generic equal-armed form cannot be assigned one pre-Christian Slavic meaning.
Provenance: Contextualised through Ioan Stanciu’s study of cross-shaped pottery signs and The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Kyivan Rus’ ring 17.190.701.
Context note: The cross’s meaning changes with object and context; do not classify every simple cross as either pagan or Christian without supporting evidence.
