Historical Context
Editorially reviewedA mid-19th-century woman’s headdress from Kargopol in northern Russia includes horses and female riders within a larger embroidered composition. Related horse imagery occurs in towels and other domestic textiles. Ethnographic study shows that zoomorphic designs changed through local practice, intercultural contact and urban influence, making direct reconstruction of pre-Christian belief uncertain.
Provenance: Contextualised through a mid-19th-century Kargopol embroidered headdress and scholarship on 19th- to early 20th-century Eastern Slavic zoomorphic embroidery.
Context note: Do not identify the rider or horse automatically with a named Slavic deity, sun chariot or fertility cult.
