Historical Context
Editorially reviewedThe white cross on red belonged to the House of Savoy and the Kingdom of Sardinia before Italian unification. From 1848 it occupied the centre of the Sardinian tricolour used by the army, and after 1861 the crowned Savoy shield remained central to the flag of the Kingdom of Italy. Military use therefore joined dynastic authority and state identity until the monarchy ended in 1946.
Provenance: The Quirinale’s history of the tricolour preserves the substance of Carlo Alberto’s 23 March 1848 order that troops carry the Savoy shield on the Italian flag. An Italian Army account of a cavalry colonel’s helmet records a flaming grenade containing the Savoy cross. These sources support military use without implying that a plain cross alone was a universal branch insignia.
