Historical Context
Editorially reviewedThe crescent and star became prominent Ottoman state emblems during the 19th century and were reproduced on flags, official architecture and military equipment. On surviving First World War-era accoutrements they identify Ottoman service, but manufacture and layout depend on the article—button, buckle or badge. The Ottoman Empire’s defeat and dissolution after the war mark the endpoint of this imperial military context.
Provenance: The strongest reference is the Imperial War Museums M1909 Turkish Army other-ranks buckle, where a white-metal circlet on a brass backplate encloses a five-pointed star above a crescent. A separately catalogued Army button and an uncertain rank badge confirm other military placements. Because the museum itself qualifies the badge identification, that object is comparative evidence rather than the sole pattern source.
