Historical Context
Editorially reviewedThe first pattern was produced in 1902 for Australian contingents serving in South Africa and was called the General Service Badge. A modified pattern followed after the South African War, and versions were worn during the First World War. “Rising Sun” became the familiar name, but the documented design began as a trophy of arms.
Provenance: Based on the Australian Army’s official badge history and Australian War Memorial historical and object records, including a first-pattern 1902 collar badge associated with the Australian Commonwealth Horse.
Context note: The current Rising Sun Badge is an official Australian Army emblem protected by Australian law. Historical description or study does not itself confer permission to reproduce the modern badge.
