Historical Context
Editorially reviewedCrowns and stars were introduced for British Army field-officer distinctions in 1810 and extended to captains and subalterns in 1855. The placement and combinations were reorganised in 1880, then adjusted again in 1902. A National Army Museum tunic dated c.1858–61 preserves an early crown-and-star combination for a captain in the 6th Bengal European Regiment, demonstrating that both date and service context matter.
Provenance: This entry describes the crown as a component within the 19th- and early-20th-century officer-rank system. A final visual should be labelled by reign or sealed pattern where possible; “Queen’s Crown” and “King’s Crown” are convenient collectors’ terms but do not by themselves establish a precise official design.
