Historical Context
Editorially reviewedStars and crowns first distinguished field officers from 1810, and stars were extended to captains and subaltern officers in 1855. Their position and combinations changed in the reforms of 1880 and 1902. By the First World War the star operated as one element in a rank system: one or more stars, sometimes combined with a crown or the crossed devices of general officers, indicated the wearer’s grade.
Provenance: The rank badge is supported by the Pritzker Military Museum’s catalogued British officer’s Bath star. Royal Museums Greenwich’s full military Order of the Bath star is included as a comparison so the reduced uniform pip is not inaccurately drawn as the complete chivalric insignia.
