Evidence & Historical Context
Editorially reviewedDocumented identification
The subject is a generic laurel branch or foliage emblem rendered as a simplified botanical silhouette. It is not identified as common laurel in flower, ground laurel or mountain laurel, which receive separate period meanings.
Historical meaning
Kate Greenaway's late nineteenth-century flower dictionary explicitly assigns the unqualified laurel the meaning “glory.”
Scholarly interpretation
Laurel shows floriography borrowing from a much older symbolic tradition rather than creating meaning anew. At the same time, period dictionaries' separate laurel entries demonstrate the need to distinguish the classical emblem from botanically different plants sharing the common name.
Modern associations
Laurel remains associated with victory, achievement, honour, excellence and recognition, visible in expressions such as laureate and in the continued use of wreath imagery.
Research warning
Do not merge generic laurel with common laurel in flower, ground laurel or mountain laurel. Greenaway assigns those entries perfidy, perseverance and ambition respectively.
Provenance: This original Sanctum Hex laurel silhouette is informed by nineteenth-century botanical-emblem aesthetics and the older classical laurel tradition. It follows cited evidence and does not reproduce a specific historical illustration.
Context note: Laurel symbolism spans classical antiquity, later European emblem traditions and Victorian floriography. This entry distinguishes those layers rather than presenting all associated meanings as one nineteenth-century code.

Laurel
Laurel was a clear late-Victorian emblem of glory, continuing an older classical association with honour and victory while period dictionaries distinguished several other plants bearing the laurel name.
