An Icelandic magical stave best known from Geir Vigfússon’s 1860 Huld manuscript, not a Viking-age rune, compass or navigational instrument.
Historical meaning
The Huld manuscript instructs that the sign be carried so its bearer will not lose the way in storms or bad weather, placing it within nineteenth-century Icelandic folk-magic wayfinding and protection practice.
Scholarly interpretation
Vegvísir belongs to a later Icelandic grimoire tradition that combined Christian, learned European and Nordic elements. Its documented purpose supports guidance and protection, but not claims of Viking use or physical navigation.
Modern associations
Vegvísir may now be associated with guidance, protection, personal direction, perseverance, hope, travel, resilience and maintaining a course through uncertainty.
Research warning
Do not describe Vegvísir as Viking-age, call it a rune or ancient compass, claim archaeological Viking use or rely on it for real navigation or guaranteed protection.
Provenance: Attested in the 1860 Huld manuscript and not in Viking Age sources.
