Evidence & Historical Context
Editorially reviewedDocumented identification
The Elder Futhark ᛊ/ᛋ character, conventionally called Sowilo through reconstruction and supported by later Scandinavian sól and Old English sigel rune-name traditions.
Historical meaning
Later Scandinavian and Old English rune traditions connect the character with the sun, giving solar light and illumination a firmer linguistic basis than claims about automatic victory or success.
Scholarly interpretation
Vitality, clarity, direction and achievement are modern symbolic extensions of sunlight rather than a preserved universal divinatory doctrine. Twentieth-century Nazi and later extremist appropriation is much later than the rune but affects contemporary reception.
Modern associations
Sowilo may now be associated with the sun, illumination, vitality, hope, strength, renewal, clarity, direction, achievement and conscious rejection of later extremist misuse.
Research warning
Do not promise victory or success, present modern divination as ancient consensus, ignore Nazi and later extremist appropriation of angular sun-rune forms, or imply that such misuse defines the rune’s older history.
Provenance: Sowilo is linked to the sun and to successful, illuminating force in runic interpretation.
Context note: Twentieth-century Nazi organisations and later extremists appropriated angular sun-rune forms. The rune substantially predates those uses, but contemporary presentation should provide historical context and avoid ideological framing.

Sowilo
Sowilo has a strong historical anchor in the sun: later Scandinavian and Old English rune names preserve that association. Modern symbolism draws from sunlight toward clarity, vitality, hope, strength, renewal, success, and forward direction.
