Historical Context
Editorially reviewedWheel-made Slavonic pottery decorated with horizontal grooves and single or multiple wavy lines circulated around the southern Baltic during the 9th and 10th centuries and continued in later ceramic traditions. Studies of zoned ornament show that decorative schemes can illuminate workshop practice and interregional contact, but they should not be converted automatically into symbolic language.
Provenance: Based on archaeological studies of early medieval Slavonic and West Slavic pottery decorated with zoned, grooved and wavy-line ornament.
Context note: Treat the band as ceramic decoration and typological evidence unless a specific excavated context supports a symbolic interpretation.
