Historical Context
Editorially reviewedThe source object is an 11th–12th-century gold and cloisonné-enamel temple pendant made in Kyiv. Temple pendants formed part of elite dress in Kyivan Rus’, where local workshops adapted fashions and techniques associated with the Byzantine court. The museum identifies the design as two birds flanking a tree of life; that descriptive identification should not be expanded into evidence for a pan-Slavic pagan cult.
Provenance: Based on The Metropolitan Museum of Art temple pendant 17.190.684, made in Kyiv and dated to the 11th–12th century.
