Spiral Motif — Slavic Folk Carving and Decorated Eggs preview

Historical Context

Editorially reviewed

Museum and scholarly collections preserve Ukrainian pysanky from numerous ethnographic regions, principally dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their catalogued designs demonstrate strong regional variation. This entry therefore represents a later folk-art form and should not be used as direct evidence for early medieval Slavic religion.

Provenance: Based on late 19th- and early 20th-century Ukrainian pysanky in the collection of the Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Context note: Water, eternity and protective interpretations are regional folk readings, not universal or securely reconstructed ancient meanings.
