Historical Context
Editorially reviewedGold cloisonné ornaments made in or probably in Kyiv during the 11th and 12th centuries show birds arranged symmetrically within medallions and linked jewellery. Such work reflects Kyivan Rus’ participation in the courtly artistic world of Byzantium while retaining locally produced forms. The bird pairing is historically secure; its precise symbolism remains unresolved.
Provenance: Based on Kyivan Rus’ cloisonné jewellery in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, including chain 17.190.682, dated 1000–1200 and probably made in Kyiv.
