Historical Context
Editorially reviewedTwo-horned crescent pendants became established in Rus’ from about the 10th century and remained widespread through the 11th–13th centuries. Archaeological study traces important forms to Mediterranean and Byzantine precedents and notes their occurrence in Christian-period burial assemblages, sometimes together with cross pendants. Shape alone therefore cannot identify the wearer’s belief or a uniquely Slavic tradition.
Provenance: Based on Natalia Khamayko’s archaeological study of crescent pendants in 11th–13th-century Rus’, including their typology, distribution and contested interpretation.
