Evidence & Historical Context
Review in progressDocumented identification
Entrance mosaic with chained dog and the inscription CAVE CANEM, House of the Tragic Poet, Pompeii, before 79 CE; Archaeological Park of Pompeii.
Historical meaning
A literal threshold warning marking the entrance as watched and defended.
Scholarly interpretation
The dog and inscription provide clear evidence of warning and household boundary control. Although dogs could carry wider religious or funerary associations in Roman culture, this mosaic does not by itself demonstrate a magical dog cult or amuletic rite.
Modern associations
The mosaic can now represent vigilance, loyalty, defended boundaries, private space, and an unmistakable warning to intruders.
Provenance: The design follows the documented entrance mosaic of the House of the Tragic Poet in Pompeii, including its historically attested Latin inscription.
Context note: CAVE CANEM is genuine Latin meaning “Beware of the dog.” The inscription should remain a literal historical warning rather than decorative pseudo-Latin or proof of a magical practice.
