Scottish maker builds research-led digital archive of more than 500 historical symbols

Sanctum Hex has announced that its Symbol Vault now contains more than 500 researched symbols, each developed to connect documented historical context with carefully reconstructed digital artwork.

Research before interpretation

The Vault is built around a simple editorial principle: documented historical evidence should be distinguished from later or modern interpretation. When the original meaning of a symbol remains unknown, the archive says so rather than filling the gap with certainty.

“The aim is to make a useful creative resource without flattening the history behind the imagery. The research comes first; the artwork grows from that foundation.”

From archive to object

Alongside its research, the Vault provides contemporary artwork intended for designers, laser cutters and other makers. The growing collection supports both digital exploration and the creation of physical objects.
